From Page To Stage: Turning Poets Into Performers

FREE Two-Part Workshop + Performance

Giving voice to written work can add layers of meaning while clarifying our intent and charging the inky symbols on the page with emotional and intellectual substance. In this free, three-part workshop, participants will work with award-winning performance poet, storyteller, and educator David Gonzalez to hone the skills needed to enliven the written page for the performance stage, then perform in front of an audience.

In the first session, participants will learn the concepts of Physical Presence, Voice and Articulation, Dramatic Appropriateness, Evidence of Understanding, and Overall Performance. As homework, participants will be asked to memorize their poems. Though participants are encouraged to have a printed version of their poem available for back-up, reciting from memory results in a better audience experience and is also an effective revision tool. When reciting a work from memory, extraneous words fall away. Recitation also uses the same part of your brain as anxiety, effectively cancelling out nervousness.

One week later, participants will gather again to share the results of their at-home practice and receive individualized feedback from Mr. Gonzalez in preparation for a public performance that same evening. The performance will begin with workshop participants and culiminate with Mr. Gonzalez reading selections from his 2022 collection of poetry titled Soundings.

Please bring one poem to work on/perform, and wear loose-fitting clothing. Light dinner included.
